Overview

MiCAM05 is the latest model of the MiCAM series high speed imaging systems developed by Brainvision, Inc. New features that were previously unavailable include compatibility with multiple types of camera heads, long-term recording, high-speed data transfer using USB 3.0 technology, better compatibility with external equipment, real time pixel outputs, and additional analog inputs.

MiCAM05 can be utilized in a variety of bio-imaging applications. Numerous scientific papers have been published with voltage sensitive dye imaging and calcium imaging applications, but MiCAM05 can also be used for fluorescence protein-based voltage/calcium indicators such as FRET, GCaMP, and also intrinsic imaging based on hemoglobin or flavoprotein.


New Features for MiCAM05 Processor

Single processor for multiple types of camera head

Multiple types of CMOS camera head with different spatial/temporal resolutions are compatible with MiCAM05 processor. The camera head can be easily switched or replaced based on the experimental application. (It is not possible to use different types of camera heads simultaneously).

Direct data saving and long-term data acquisition with USB3.0 high-speed data transfer

New USB3.0 interface allows for significantly faster data transfer from processor to PC. Its possible to save data directly to HDD or SSD in parallel with data acquisition, and enables long-term recording of several minutes up to a few hours, regardless of the RAM capacity. (Note that sampling rate, number of pixels, number of cameras used and PC specifications will affect the total recording time).


Up to four cameras can easily be connected and used in a completely synchronized multi-camera system

Up to two camera interface boards can be connected to the MiCAM05 processor. Each interface board is equipped with two camera ports, therefore up to four of the same type of camera head can be connected at any time. This allows for simultaneous imaging of multiple fluorescent wavelengths as well as three-dimensional imaging from different angles.


Real time light intensity monitor/output is available as a standard function

The real time light intensity monitor/output function, available as an optional unit for MiCAM Ultima (DAC/ADC expanding unit), is available as standard for MiCAM05. This function is designed to output the light intensity changes of up to eight user selected pixels via eight BNC connections. Therefore, waveforms of fluorescence change can be monitored and output before and after data acquisition. Its also possible to monitor the change in light intensity in real time using optional software.


Various I/O connectors, and improved compatibility with external devices

MiCAM05 has multiple input and output connections available, compared to previous MiCAM systems. These universally standard I/O connections can be synchronized with image acquisition and external devices. An additional slot has been added to MiCAM05 so customization is also available depending on the research application.

D225 CMOS camera (newly developed)

MiCAM05-D225カメラヘッド

D225”camera head uses a newly developed CMOS image sensor. The spatial resolution of 256x240 pixels is the highest among MiCAM CMOS camera heads developed by Brainvision.


ULTIMA CMOS camera

“ULTIMA”camera head uses the same CMOS image sensor (100x100 pixels) as the previous version MiCAM ULITMA, but it has been redesigned as a new “digital” (rather than analog) camera for MiCAM05.




Other Features

Turnkey system ready for immediate use

The system consists of hardware/software specifically designed for high-speed fluorescence imaging, plus PC and monitor. Before use, calibration/setting/tuning is not necessary. Hardware connection is straightforward between components using cables. It is possible to acquire data immediately after setup.

Pre/Post trigger mode

MiCAM05 can record activity which occurs before and after a trigger signal is generated. When an external trigger occurs such as a spontaneous biological signal, or a trigger pulse from an external stimulator, etc..., a specified amount of "pre-trigger" data can be saved. The "post-trigger" data is also collected in the same recording. As a result, both pre-trigger data and post-trigger data can be saved in one acquisition period.


Software for data analysis with intuitive user interface

BV_Ana

BV_Ana is the image data analysis software for MiCAM series imaging systems. It has an intuitive user interface and is designed for users to immediately analyze data after image acquisitions. In addition to quick image and movie display with user selected wave display, various types of filters are available, as well as data export functions to multiple data formats including avi, jpeg, csv, simple binary/ascii, multitiff, etc…creating data files for presentations is very simple and straightforward.
