Cardiac Imaging BV-XB1

BV-XB1 was developed in response to requests from labs saying that "MiCAM high speed is not always necessary, but higher spatial resolution is desired.” BV-XB1 is a high resolution imaging system which combines a high resolution camera with 1920 x 1200 pixels, plus image acquisition software developed for bioimaging experiments.

The system includes ESTM-9, which is equipped with external camera control, external illumination control, pulse outputs, analog outputs, and analog inputs recording functionality. By connecting external equipment such as a light source, electrical stimulator, and amplifiers, ESTM-9 synchronizes image acquisition with inputs/outputs of external equipment.

In combination with Brainvision’s fluorescence macroscope, it is possible to construct a wide-field / high resolution / high S/N ratio fluorescence imaging system.

Features of XB1CM Camera

XB1CM camera

In the past, it was thought that that CCD sensors are superior under low light condition. In the past several years, however, CMOS sensors suitable for low light condition have been developed due to recent improvements of CMOS technology.

The dark noise of the sensor used in the XB1CM camera head is as low as that of CCD sensors, and it is possible to capture images at relatively high frame rates. Due to this combination of low noise and relatively high speed, XB1CM is suitable for low light level bioimaging applications, such as calcium imaging, imaging using fluorescent proteins such as GCaMP/FRET, and flavoprotein intrinsic imaging.

High resolution and large sensor

Spatial resolution: 1920x1200 pixels, sensor size:11.3mmx7.1mm

Wide dynamic range and low dark noise

A large well capacity of about 32ke- results in greater dynamic range than CCD sensors, and low dark noise comparable to a CCD camera. It can be used for wide range of applications from low to medium light conditions.

Maximum frame rate and sensitivity can be changed by number of pixels and binning

  • Outputs frame timing pulses to external camera, or receives frame timing signals from external camera.
  • Frame rate can be input.
  • Time-lapse acquisition control is also available.
Acquisition Control

Illumination Control for External Light Source

  • Outputs signals to external light source in synchronization with camera control.
  • Continuous, intermittent, or custom light pattern available.

Pulse Stimulator

  • 4 channels of pulse stimulation can be controlled individually.
  • Stimulation works with or without camera control.
  • Continuous stimulation using free-run mode is also available.
Pulse Stimulator

Analog Output - Custom Pulse Pattern

  • 2 channels of analog outputs.
  • Pulses 1-4 can be generated and output from Aout 1.

Other Features

Turnkey system ready for immediate use

The system consists of hardware/software specifically designed for high-speed fluorescence imaging, and the PC and monitor are included as standard equipment. Before use, calibration/setting/tuning is not necessary. The hardware connection is straightforward between components using cables, making it possible to acquire data immediately after setup.

Multi camera system

By connecting multiple XB1CMs to PC, it is possible to operate as a fully synchronized multi camera system. Two images can be superimposed on monitor display so that user can overlap two images.

Time lapse imaging

BV-XB1 can capture phenomenon that changes in a few minutes up to several hours, intermittently. Because illumination light is turned on only at the time of image acquisition, phototoxic effects to sample are minimized, and a stable baseline can be acquired.

Main Features of Software

Acquisition Software (BV Workbench)

BV Workbench is the image acquisition software that controls MiCAM03 imaging system. In addition to image acquisition and control of inputs and outputs of the imaging system, analysis functions including movie playback, wave display, filter functions, etc…are also included. BV Workbench has an intuitive user interface that is easily operated with the use of a mouse.

  • Image acquisition mode: Single acquisition (Save to PC memory or direct recording to SSD/HDD), Averaging, Time Lapse Imaging
  • Image overlay, Image Flip/Rotation
  • Wave display of light intensity change of pixel (real-time or after image acquisition)

Analysis Software (BV_Ana)

BV_Ana is the software used to analyze optical imaging data. It was developed mainly for analysis of neuronal activity and cardiac activity using voltage sensitive dyes.

By superimposing the change in light intensity of each pixel onto the background image, the location of light intensity changes as well as the percentage of light intensity change can be easily analyzed. It is also very straightforward to create presentation materials in the form of images and movies.
